Best for Rest: The Best Apps To Help You Monitor Your Sleep Cycles

Life on the road can be tiring and stressful so it’s very important to make sure that one gets a good sleep each night (or day for you night shift folks). Once again, technology comes to our rescue, making things easier for us by introducing gadgets and apps that help monitor our sleeping patterns. Knowing our sleeping patterns is the first step to improving our sleeping habits.

While most heart rate monitors do provide sleep-monitoring functionality, not everyone is willing to spend on one. Fortunately, there are options available for those of us who own smartphones. They may not offer the full functionality of a specialized gadget, but they provide the basic functions you need. Here are our favorites:

Sleep as Android

Price – $3

As the name suggests, Sleep as Android is an Android-only app. You have to “log in” and  “log out” when you prepare for bed and wake up for the day, so the app has an idea of how many hours you’re sleeping in a day. Based on your recommended daily hours of sleep, the app will update you on whether you’re behind on sleep It also has functions to help you identify if you have sleep problems such as sleep apnea!

Sleep Cycle

Price – $1

An iOS exclusive, Sleep Cycle is one of the best sleep monitoring apps available. It has motion monitoring to track if you’ve been tossing and turning at night or getting up to go to the bathroom. In the morning, you can review the data gathered via a summary chart that doesn’t require you to have a degree to understand! Unfortunately, there’s no word if they’ll consider an Android release eventually.


Price – FREE

Another Android app, Sleepbot offers the same motion tracking and sound recording functions as the last two entries on the list, while also providing users with little tips on how to sleep more soundly and how to improve sleep hygiene. For users who want a more in-depth analysis, Sleepbot can link up with the web app to provide more detailed reports. Did we mention it’s free?
